Worker numbers up in Scotland
Thursday, 19 Jul, 2007
Scotland's employment levels are booming, new figures have shown.
According to research conducted by the Office for National Statistics, unemployment in the region has dropped to a record low, while worker numbers rose by 25,000 over the last quarter.
Scottish Secretary Des Browne described the results as "exceptional".
"With record numbers of people in Scotland in work and with the unemployment rate never having been lower, these figures are a ringing endorsement of the social welfare policies delivered by this government," he told the Scotsman.
Meanwhile, Ron Hewitt, chief executive of Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, said that the trend was being echoed in the capital.
"This is great news and is a situation that is mirrored in Edinburgh. We have the financial stability at the moment that attracts investment," he stated.
Unemployment across the UK was seen to fall to its lowest level in more than a year.
